A short behind-the-scenes thing on that upcoming Les Mis film. All the singing is done on-camera, no pre-record + miming! The technical challenges involved in pulling this off on such a complex production are mind-boggling, but man, the difference will tell.

Today is Lunchbox day. Child poverty in NZ has been in the news lately and current affairs TV show Campbell Live has been pushing hard on this issue for a long time now. It’s become impossible to deny we have a problem. The solutions to the problem are political, but as Campbell Live has argued, they are also complex and will take a long time to work through. Meanwhile there are kids hungry right now. So they have instituted Lunchbox Day – taking donations to give Kiwi kids some food at school. In NZ, text “lunch” to 8595 to make a $3 donation. It’s deeply upsetting that there is a need for this, but Campbell Live are keeping the pressure on the bigger aspects of the problem. This is a good thing to do. Help if you can.

  1. “I’m sure this’ll be old news to you!”

    🙂

They used to have people hang out fake washing on the fake lines for the fake houses at one point, and toward the end of the war used them for photo-ops with plant employees (“Rosie Riveters”). Apparently the dried chicken feather trees stunk the place up when it rained. Lockheed-Burbank wasn’t the only factory that got the makeover; the Boeing plant in Seattle at least had the same treatment, and I think the other California plants may have as well.

  2. I read BBC version of the Nazi Space Buddha story yesterday and went “Wow. The Ahnenerbe make it into a mainstream news piece.’ Crazy. If anyone is remotely interested, ‘The Masterplan’ by Heather Pringle is a rather good book that gives the history of these whacko Nazi expeditions in detail. Fascinating stuff.

Also: Delia Derbyshire is a pioneering legend. Everyone should listen to her.

  3. I used to think I was a little bit odd wanting to make floorplans of places like those TV apartments, but it’s the internet! There’s a place for everyone and there is no weird because it’s all weird!

    Maps. Cool 🙂

  4. Wiki’s article on the Ahnenerbe looks quite good, if typically dry:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahnenerbe
Uses Pringle’s book as its primary source, too.

    Gator: fate-or.
Malc: I heart delia so bad.
Samm: chicken stink is not something I associate with wartime aviation, that is now changed
jet: YES. In the internet age, there is no weird. That is a phrase to remember.
