{"id":1216,"date":"2010-01-11T08:19:54","date_gmt":"2010-01-11T08:19:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/morgue.isprettyawesome.com\/?p=1216"},"modified":"2011-01-15T13:11:33","modified_gmt":"2011-01-15T00:11:33","slug":"its-not-the-thinking-its-how-were-thinking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/morgue.isprettyawesome.com\/?p=1216","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s not the thinking, it&#8217;s how we&#8217;re thinking."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.alcohol.org.nz\/CampaignItsNotTheDrinking.aspx\">with apologies to ALAC<\/a>)<br \/>\nThings aren&#8217;t working as they should.<br \/>\nEverywhere you look there are systems that don&#8217;t deliver what we as a society want them to deliver. <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Wire_%28season_1%29\">Law enforcement<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Wire_%28season_2%29\">workforce management<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Wire_%28season_3%29\">politics<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Wire_%28season_4%29\">education<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Wire_%28season_5%29\">media<\/a>, to name five that come to mind for some reason.<br \/>\nWhy is everything broken?<br \/>\nAnswer: it&#8217;s not. These systems work perfectly. Keep a system running and it will inevitably trend towards finding the smoothest, least complicated way it can do what it does.<br \/>\nThe systems fail us not because they&#8217;re broke, but because they have to interact with something that they cannot control and that we did not design: <em>us<\/em>.<br \/>\nWe resist change. We resent uncertainty. We fear difference. We desire status. We react emotionally not logically. We interpret the world as stories. We construct for ourselves a self-identity.<br \/>\nEverything that doesn&#8217;t work comes from the way we think.<br \/>\nWe break the world for ourselves.<br \/>\nAnd this means we can fix it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(with apologies to ALAC) Things aren&#8217;t working as they should.
