\nHer fingers touched the wood of the desk, old and unvarnished, making contact. Wake\u2019s voice from behind her: \u2018Why did you turn me down?\u2019
\n\u2018I had to.\u2019 She wouldn\u2019t face him. The wood was hard beneath her fingertips. \u2018I couldn\u2019t see another way.\u2019
\n\u2018You weren\u2019t interested?\u2019
\n\u2018I couldn\u2019t see it going well.\u2019
\n\u2018How hard did you look?\u2019
\n\u2018How hard did you?\u2019
\n\u2018I never look ahead.\u2019
\nHills clipped the edge of the sun. Her fingers lifted. \u2018Someone has to.\u2019
