8pm: “Hmm. That’s interesting. The scanner gives me an error message and doesn’t operate. I wonder why?”
10pm: “What do you mean my printer/scanner model number doesn’t exist? I’m reading it right off the plastic casing!”
1am: “What do you mean you can’t see the printer any more? It’s right there in the other window!”
3am: “What do you mean you can’t shut down? How can a computer forget how to shut down?”
*deep breaths*

There’s always the hardware failsafe shutdown (push in the power key and hold for 5-10 seconds) which will shut down your computer.
Without wanting to sound like a Help Desk, shutting down and starting up again is a good solution. Of course, I don’t know much about your problem.
The hard shutdown and I are old, close friends. Usually I have to use it because the system has frozen during some task or other – this was the first time I ever had to use it because it had apparently gone into an infinite loop during the actual shutdown process itself.

I find it takes exactly 8 seconds.
I hate how that’s a techie’s solution to everything. I have to preface any conversation with our techie with ‘I’ve already tried shutting down and rebooting, but this is STILL happening….’ in order to avoid his fob off method number one. He has other tactics which kick in at this stage.
I like him though. He’s just a defeatist!
I like a techie who refuses to give in to technology glitches – there is always a way around them, I say.
pulling the plug works, especially when a dodgy web site is kicking your system for 6.
In (albeit very slight) defence of tech help desks “shut down and restart” does fix a lot of problems – and not just computers. My heater, for example, sometimes shorts itself on a bit of cat hair, and that involves turning on and turning off to reset itself.
And, importantly, the “shut down and restart” option also helps address U.S.E.R errors…
