More On Vocabulary

Still busy. Just about to go meet Tim and Gen, who have come to stay in Edinburgh for a couple days, hurrah!
Check this out if you want to read an excellent exploration of how rhetoric can dismantle worthwhile political discussion – it’s from 2000 and American but I was impressed mightily. From, as ever, the indispensable Making Light.

  1. Call me the Morgue comment police…
You say of the article you link too: “it’s from 2000 and American but I was impressed mightily”
This implies that you think that generally work from America is not impressive? Do you mena to say that? Care to elaborate?

  2. er, I was tired? I think I was trying to get at its relevancy – even though it’s four years old and specific to the US situation, I think it’s relevant now and beyond the borders of the US. Anyone who’s engaged in an argument on the net or read any letters to the editor anywhere will benefit from reading it.
I love America. There is an American asleep on my sofa as I write. Many preconceptions have been washed away by meeting people from the US – and I expect more to go after i’ve visited.
    Which, hopefully, will be soon…

  3. I like it as well. America I mena. It’s a big crazy country filled with crazy people (mostly in ways that are rather endearing).
I figured it was something like that, the comment I mean. But, like I said, call me the Morgue comment police .

  4. I appreciate the comment policing. You force me to raise my game in terms of how I express myself. It’s very worthwhile.
What I also need is a comment policeperson who’ll make sure I don’t leave things unanswered for months…
