  1. “At least ten”
    “conservationists believe”
“on two beaches in Queensland state”
    “according to local fishery officials”
There are three referenced authorities, “Michael Hornby, a friend of Mr Irwin and executive director of his conservation group Wildlife Warriors,” and “Rick Symons, government fisheries manager of animal welfare,” and “Wayne Sumpton, from the state fisheries department.”
Neither of those people say there are stingrays being killed.
Hornby makes a comment that he’s concerned that the rays might be hunted and killed in retaliation: take it out of this story, and such a quote could’ve been said by any conservationally minded person in the days since Irwin’s death. There’s actually no clue, here, that Hornby is even commenting on actual dead fish.
The second quote, from Symons, simply states that “authorities will investigate.” He’s not saying that such killings have occured.
Also, note that there is no named quoting of someone who has seen such a mutilated stingray, or that such killings are occuring because of Irwin’s death.
In fact, Sumpton is reported as saying that “there had been reports of similar incidents in the past after fishermen had inadvertently caught stingrays and cut off their tails to avoid being stung.”
It’s a made up story… or, perhaps, more generously lazy journalism. Someone somewhere heard someone say that there were some stingrays getting killed somewhere. So, they then asked a few people about what they would think if rays had been killed in revenge for Irwin’s death.
    Fnord.
