Shihad – Wellington, Jan 6

There are only a few musical acts I get all fanboy over.
Shihad is one of them.
First chance to see them live since 2001 or so, at the Welly Town Hall gig where I smashed out one of my front teeth in the mosh pit.
I am excited.

  1. ‘You Again’ is perhaps the best song they ever wrote, with the possible exception of ‘Bitter’ or maybe ‘Get Up’. I can’t decide at the moment. Anyway, we saw them play here in London town recently. Even your sis had a good time. They are hands down and without a shadow of a doubt, the best live band in the whole wide world.
    So there.

  2. I was thinking of you the other week Morgue when Shihad came to my work place one evening, set up a massive stage, and recorded a gig for a music TV station in front of a big crowd.
This all happened on the other side of a massive window immediately behind where I sit and work, with the stage all of 25 feet away. All I needed to do was swivel through 180 degrees on my chair and I would have had a perfect view over the heads of the crowd, the floor of my office being about four foot higher than the ground of the quad outside where this was all taking place.
Given that in the past I’ve travelled from one end of the Island to the other to see these guys it’s a little paradoxical that instead of sticking around after work I went home to bed.
I’m older, but am I any wiser?
And M@@ack, I’ve always had a soft spot for Churn myself, but ‘You Again’ and ‘Bitter’ are two of my favourites also. Unlike alot of Shihad songs I’d be interested to hear an acoustic arrangement of ‘Bitter’. It’s got good dynamics, with a great key change in the bridge.

  3. You Again was a low point on an otherwise great album. I usually fast forwarded past it. 😛
    Churn is where it’s at.
I still haven’t heard the anything from the Pacifier era onwards. :/ I probably should someday.
    Choke on my subjectivity. 🙂

  4. I see your subjectivity and raise you an opinion.
“Debs Night Out” is my favourite, cause it’s all pretty and dark and angsty and subtle and cool and all that stuff.
    Luv, Scott.

  5. I saw them at the London gig too, and was reminded just how slick they are as entertainers. A lot of their newer stuff has left me cold as studio material, but they never fail to lift it up a notch live. Hell, I moshed for the first time in years. Well, pogo-ed is more accurate…it wasn’t really much of a proper mosh pit.
The Churn stuff is still great balls out stuff (not to mention heavily laced with euphoric nostalgia), but I think Killjoy is their best. And I also think Pacifier (the song, not the album) is pure rock anthem brilliance.

  6. deb’s night out has always been my favourite. plus i think the music vid is filmed in my primary school hall, which gives it that x factor.

  7. I’m pleased to hear that they still rule live ’cause I’ve been bored by every album they’ve released after Killjoy. Admittedly I’ve usually only given them a single spin, but nothing’s sounded like a “there’s something going on that’ll grow on me” option.
