Whatever happened to Arbor Day?

June 5 is when NZ marks Arbor Day.
I remember very clearly that as a child this was an important day in the calendar. Arbor Day! The day on which some people plant trees!
My question, then: has Arbor Day faded in prominence, or is it just that Arbor Day is a schoolkid thing?
(And if it has faded in prominence, isn’t it about time it was unfaded?)

I am marking assignments. Michelle today accused me of being a teacher. My protests sounded hollow even to me. And for the record, I am kinda ashamed about not seeing any film fest movies. It has not been a good movie-going month for me.

  1. A film festival is an opportunity, not an observance…
As for Arbor Day, it could be a school thing, or a regional thing. I remember it chiefly from early primary-school years. I also remember it as the title of a parody in Mad Magazine (c.1981), of horror movies build around calendrical events.

  2. Don’t worry bout the film fest – B has been avidly attending and writing about it – including a disturbing movie about body parts shooting fire…..
    S.

  3. I agree with Andrew. Why shame about not movie-going? You should go to movies because you want to, not because have to. 🙂
I only remember doing Arbor Day in Primary School – although I do recall there is usually some photo on page 3 of the Dominion Post with some primary school kid planting a tree to mark Arbor day – and I don’t think I remember even seeing that this year. So maybe you’re right and it has faded from national consciousness.

  4. I went to a planting a couple of years ago with some kids, on the town belt. So it’s still going on – lowkey like, though.
Haha- you’re a teacher too! Marking sucks.

  5. I agree with Morgue. He should have been ashamed about not seeing any FF movies. Fortunately, I saved him from this fate worse than death.
I also remember the Mad magazine Arbor Day thing, which actually bore some resemblance to the real satirical horror movie Mother’s Day.
