Robert Downey Jr.

Just a quick one here. Cal and I made it along to see the new movie Robert Downey Jr. the other day. It features Robert Downey Jr. playing Robert Downey Jr., and he gives an excellent portrayal – not only is he faithful to the source material, but he makes the character of Robert Downey Jr. far more charismatic and charming than you’d believe was possible. You just can’t take your eyes off him.
Also features Gwyneth Paltrow playing A Girl, and she does it well.
I really did enjoy this film. It’s far from flawless – the gender and geo politics are both a bit askew (but then, that’s in line with the source material), and the final fight between Robert Downey Jr. and Bald Jeff Bridges was lacking something or other – but what the hell. Robert Downey Jr.! Whatcha gonna do!
Anyway, word on the street is that Robert Downey Jr. makes a cameo appearance as Robert Downey Jr. in the upcoming film, Not By Ang Lee. Yet another reason to go see that one!

  1. I actually saw the same move 12 hours ago.
    I had a very uncomfortable seat though….

  2. Beau and I went to see the Robert Downey Jr movie this weekend too! We also saw Speed Racer. I blogged.

  3. I think that in the race to say how good Robert Downey Jr is, people are forgetting to mention how good Jeff Bridges is.
So, for the record: Jeff Bridges with a beard and no hair is goddamn awesome.

  4. I would also like to say that Jeff Bridges is great. In fact, it wasn’t until after I saw the movie that I even realised that he was on the poster. I thought it was some other dude.
Downey is of course great as well.
Having heard that Downey was going to make a cameo in that film I became more enthused as I really hadn’t been.
Then I saw the trailer, and I’m no longer enthused. I could link, but it’s on Youtube somewhere, and I’m not interested enough to bother.

  5. I haven’t seen the movie but I infer from your comments that Robert Downey Jr is in fact a superhero and used to support infamous his drug habit through the weapons trade as well as making the occasional film.

  6. Interesting review there. At first I thought you were taking the michael, given that I’ve never heard of Robert Downey Jr inventing a flying metal suit.
Then I remember that given the amount of drugs he’s taken, it’s quite possible that he utterly *believes* he did invent such a suit.
