Never read Watchmen, the 80s comic by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons that Time called one of the Top 100 Novels of all time? Now you can remedy that – read it online here at “Mah Shelf”. And if you have read it, here’s something for you too – a spoiler-heavy discussion with the creators from 1988.
The Mah Shelf site delivers a pretty good reading experience, fast and easy, I was quite impressed. Also on offer: the infamous Spider-Man comic from the 80s where Spidey reveals he was sexually abused by an older boy named Skip. And for good measure, here’s Skip’s entry in the delightfully obsessive Marvel Universe Appendix.
Knife Man spotted this one: a review of Dark Knight that… ah, I’ll just copy the same bit he did: “There seems to me no question that the Batman film “The Dark Knight,” currently breaking every box office record in history, is at some level a paean of praise to the fortitude and moral courage that has been shown by George W. Bush in this time of terror and war”
79-year-old Groucho Marx on the last episode of failed comedy-music show, Music Scene, in 1969. He keeps getting laughs just by taking what the host says and repeating it with a slightly different emphasis – it’s marvellous.
Kind of comix-heavy this week, but that’s just how the cookie has done gone crumbled yessir.
Also: congrats to the Alligator for his ice cream being recognised in Seattle Weekly’s Best of 2008 series!

So, that’s a copyright infringing online version of Watchmen then? Mahshelf is a kind of youtube for pdfs? I wonder how big the filesizes are. Seems like a cool idea for self-publishing comic artists and people archiving public domain stuff. I suppose it’s inevitable that people will upload anything they like.
Don’t get me wrong – I’m all over piracy like a rash. It just looks like a lawsuit waiting to happen.
Like a rash I tells ya…
If you haven’t read Watchmen, you’re missing a treat.
Unless you’re one of those people who says things like “Science fiction? Pah, that’s just trash!”, in which case you’re welcome to whatever boring crap you’re into. :-p
Oh yeah, and congrats to the Alligator.
The Bush/Batman thing just keeps giving:
“At one point, the Morgan Freeman character says to Batman, ‘Wait a minute, hang on…you’re eavesdropping on everyone in Gotham?’ And Batman says, ‘Yes, to stop this terrorist.’ Morgan Freeman says, ‘I can’t be a part of it.’ And yet Morgan Freeman does become a part of it, and they find the Joker. One of the ways they find the Joker is through eavesdropping. I mean the parallels here of what’s going on is to me stunning.”

See, the US government should be allowed to use warrantless wiretapping against its own citizens and friendly nations because *that’s how Batman caught the Joker*, and gosh darn it, if that ain’t evidence of how effective it is, then I ain’t a right-wing radio host.
In the next film, no doubt, Batman will melt the Penguin’s icy secret base, thereby justifying global warming.
@Matt “…Mahshelf is a kind of youtube for pdfs?” <– I’ve tried this one, actually it only accept images. Seems realistic for comics. pdfs have never been good for comics 😀
About that piracy stuff, who knows, maybe when this “YouTube for comics” grow larger, people might turn to reading digital comics instead of paper comics (which can be a good thing). And then the slowpokes of comic industry might want to run faster and provide us cheap digital version of their comics ;))
