Satirical US newsmagazine ‘The Onion’ has a long history of, along with the straight out absurd stuff and the point-out-human-foibles stuff, making sobering political points at the right time. The issue they produced following 9/11 was astonishing – without compromising their commitment to their principles and style, they honoured the event.
In the buildup to the new election, with the big issue the mobilisation of voters, it has done it again.
Republicans Urge Minorities To Get Out And Vote On Nov. 3rd
I read it and I almost cried.

This, on the other hand, purports to be real.

50% of Americans is a smaller number than I thought it would be. The reality, well at least I think it’s a reality, is that most people don’t want real answers. They want platitues, they want homlilies. They don’t want Truth, they want News. They don’t want Issues, they want Sensation.
People like you, Morgue, are rare. People who care about anything beyond thier own four walls are rare.
People see world problems on the TV and they want something done but they don’t want to do it. Stay in your own corner. Look out for you and yours. If there’s a problem donate to a related charity.
It’s sad to say that this is even in the church too. People would rather give money to missionaries than *be* missionaries. People would rather donate to mercy ministries (poverty allieviation, working with AIDS sufferers etc) than go and *do* the work.
Why get involved when you can donate to someone else who’ll get involved for you. Our world is becoming more and more virtual every day. People are happy to be one step removed from everything. When the real world happens to them (ie 9/11) they don’t know what to do. So they want someone in power who will throw around platitudes and slogans, add a little branding (How *can* you have a wat on terror? A war on an emotion, it’s insane) and viola, a nice balm to placate the wealthy (and yes, by world standards even the poor in America and the west are wealthy), and everyone is happy.
Except you, me and Mr Moore.
