I knew about the secret Flight of the Conchords gig at Aro Video, but instead I went to work.
Does this mean I am square, because I went to work instead of ditchin’ to go see the dudes? Or does it mean that I am hip, because making an effort to see Bret and Jemaine is something uncool mainstreamers do because they didn’t know them back in the day?
Or does it just mean that Bret is hotter than Jemaine? Or that Jemaine is hotter than Bret? Or that it really is just too close to call?
(“We headlined for Video Ezy back in the day,” Clement said in his trademark flat monotone.
They both then pointed out where people could find different genre movies.)

It hurts because it’s true.
I love Flight of the Conchords, but I’m so far from hip it’s painful. I’m a total late-comer. I missed them at the Edinburgh Fringe, so I only heard about them through hearsay. Then they got a TV series, and I joined the masses in worship.
I’ve never seen Concords, but I used to flat with the guy Jermaine is based on.
Well, I missed them because I didn’t think I could manage a pushchair and a wander-prone pre-schooler in a venue that small and crowded. Parenthood is a great excuse for not giving a rat’s arse whether you’re hip or not. Unless you’re one of those annoying ‘I may be a parent but I’m still hip’ types who kit out their kids in teeny-tiny versions of their own hip clothes.
(Incidentally, I’m at the other end of the Annoying Parents Continuum – the ‘I’m a Mummy now: I have different priorities’ end.)
Well, I would have gone if I had known. Not to be hip or square, but because they’re good fun, and that would be worth the effort to go.
Screw what everyone else thinks, if they can’t appreciate you doing something for the sheer joy of it, then who cares.
I certainly won’t, I’ll be having too much fun. 🙂
Visited Aro Tuesday night, wondered why the big shelf in the middle of the floor had been removed, and noticed a large pile of Conchord dvds behind the counter, yet still was totally oblivious to impending gig. Head in the clouds.
Jemaine is smokin’ hot. Bret- negatory.
