Whole Lotta Orcses

So at the last week of our first year of ORC (Ottakar’s Roleplaying Club) we had 20 people in attendance. Not bad for starting with literally no-one. Still growing as well – *five* new people today, our biggest single new-person hit ever. Groovy.
A bunch of apologies from other regulars, too. We’re a good we club, we are. Four tables today, two running Dungeons and Dragons, one running a freeform made-up-on-the-spot horror game, another running cool indy gem Shadows. Yep, we’re a good wee club. Of note: none of the people running games today had ever played before they came along to join the club.
In other words, everything is going according to my most optimistic plans.

  1. What day/time does ORC happen? WARGS is doing well but I am started to get the feeling that a monthly meeting is quite difficult for people to get to. We currently run on a week night which might explain it.

  2. ORC is a Saturday afternoon thing. I have a feeling that Saturdays are different enough in NZ that it might not be as successful a timeslot where you are.

  3. Congrats Morgue, sounds like things are going really well. Playing in public sounds like a great way to recapture the attention of former gamers.

  4. I think the culture of Saturdays and the weekend in NZ is different to the culture of it here in the UK. Saturday afternoon here tends to be ‘dead time’ – people chill out and shop, mostly. Back home in NZ, Saturday afternoon seems to be ‘catch up with friends and play sport’ time. That’s just my impression, but I think Saturday afternoon is a lot more precious to NZers than to UKers. Maybe Sunday afternoon in NZ would be a better option?

  5. Sunday afternoon? You meant to say Sunday night – for that is the *only* time to game…
My main problem is not that the rest of the weekend is too busy for NZers to take advantage, but the lack of recognition that RPing is a sport by NZers. Withouth this recognition RP games and stuff doesn’t seem as valid a way of spending you weekend time and therefore these activities are not entitled to take up time on weekends.

  6. Yeah, I think that Sunday afternoons would still be a problem as Thursdays and Sundays tend to be the two most common gaming days.
