Oscars: Criswell Predicts

I pick that the stupid Academy will do this:
ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE
Sean Penn – MYSTIC RIVER
(possible surprise: Johnny Depp – PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL. Yes, seriously.)
ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Benicio Del Toro – 21 GRAMS
ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE
50/50 between Keisha Castle-Hughes – WHALE RIDER and
Charlize Theron – MONSTER – as a Kiwi I’m backing Keisha. The Anna Paquin factor, y’know.
ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Renee Zellweger – COLD MOUNTAIN

  1. Didn’t Criswell predict we’d be living on the Moon by the ’70s?
I don’t reckon a film with dialogue as cheesy as LotR deserves any kind of Best Screenplay award.
Johnny Depp will probably win in the future for a Rain Man role.
Holly Hunter for Supporting Actress, ’cause it usually goes to a gutsy Indie-film performance, not a blonde teddy bear.
I see Blake Edwards is getting an award. Who next, George Pan Cosmatos?

  2. Much as I’d love to see Keisha win, I just can’t imagaine the academy giving its main actress award to a kid. I mean, she deserves to win (carrying the movie by herself, so natural & real rather than the carefully affected accents and mannerisms of “great” actors) but I can’t see it.
I thought Mystic River was stunning, and in another year oscar worthy. Why did it appear in the year they decide to reward LOTR. If only it had come out couple years earlier, would have been more just than the oscar wins of the pretty-good-but-not-quite-deserving Beautiful Mind, or the abomination that is Best Picture: Chicago”.

  3. I agree with Andy – I thought City of God was a really, really good film. 🙂 That said, I’m really only interested in whether Weta Digital get Visual Effects for the third time in a row. That would be very cool, but I wouldn’t underestimate Master and Commander – water is *hard*.

  4. Hulk robbed! No Best Editing nomination!
Reminds me of a decade back when Natural Born Killers quite clearly deserved to win Best Editing and didn’t even get nominated.
Don’t get me started on the awards Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas was robbed of.
They should just give everything to Seabiscuit and admit it’s all a farce.
