Rasslin’

Urged on by Buzzandhum, AndyMac and TuataraLad, I joined a posse for my first ever night of home-grown pro-wrestling entertainment at KPW’s Halloween Howl 3.
It was very much fun.
I think Whetu the Maori warrior was my favourite in the ring, and the high-energy cheating manager Charlie Roberts was my favourite out of it, but the whole show was hella entertaining. And it was nice to see a short but heartfelt tribute to recently-deceased veteran Al Hobman, who was remembered by the “legends of NZ wrestling” including NZ’s most famous wrestler Steve Rickard.
The only way it could have been more fun is if the mysterious Dr Diablo had been on the card – I’d love to see him demonstrate how he earned his PhD in Pain!

  1. All I know is that the Macho man wasn’t there….wrestling against “Los Huevos Pequeños” with special guest referee Jesus Christ.

  2. Jenni: Yes, Jade Diamond was there. He’s my favourite too. He did this massive flying cross body over the top ropes, crashing into his opponent and onto the wooden floor. It was hard core, given there was no padding where he landed.

  3. In terms of presence, ability, and form on the night my favourite was Jade Diamond. He should be further up the card. Whetu has raw talent and his match was put together well but he has got lots to learn.

  4. Jade Diamond is, obviously, an awesome wrestler. My interest in him is purely because of his wrestling ability and not because he is hawt. Not at all.

  5. Pah, are you all blind? “The Standard Hero” Graham Hughes was the MVP of the night! Able to both combine powerful mat-based wrestling with quick high-flying moves *and* a perfect heel persona.
From stamping on the New Zealand flag at the outset, to his Johnny Wilkinson goal-kicking pose before punting The Technician in the head – Graham Hughes is WIN!

  6. Morgue – thank you for coming. Didn’t see you – was busy arm-wrestling with audio technical issues (for which I apologise to all those who attended).
NB: Senor Diablo is utilised on an ad-hoc basis. With an growing roster (as evidenced by the second outings of Shane Whitehead, Graham Hughes, Whetu, and the three-person Rock ‘n’ Roll Connection), Diablo was not required, and was instead ministering tequila to the masses at his free clinic.
Jon – the word you’re looking for is “pescado”.
Jenni – Mr Diamond is actually a little shy in real life, a really humble, nice guy. He does indeed have a superb athletic pedigree on which he can build his wrestling skills (or a “six-pack”, as some might see it), and he also has a girlfriend. Just throwing that out there. 🙂
Scott – Graham Hughes is a prize acquisition, and we’re thrilled to have him on board with KPW.
